Lesson Learned: Dating Apps are Awful!
We just recently posted some “Brand Fans” posts on our Bold Magazine website, which you can find right here:
But, we specifically left some brands out. The first is the dating app “Plenty of Fish.” Someone told us that this is one of the screens that pops up when you log in, so naturally I had to investigate
Is body type so important that it needs its own question like this? I actually could understand if they had listed ALL body types:
- Athletic
- Slender
- Plus (I don’t think BBW is a well respected term, yet, though I applaud those who are attempting to bring it back)
- Etc.
- etc.
- (I don’t know them all, just providing some examples)
But, I’m shocked to see just this one body type singled out. And, the phrase BBW… we either need to commit to it positively or stop using it. It’s not there, yet. Plus size? Extended plus size? Sure. Not this.
Do you know what else bothers me? “The Jersey Shore” TV show. I have been watching the old seasons (thinking they are actually the new ones, I can’t find them, but I don’t know that I want to). And, the way they talk about plus size women is ABSURD. They did a whole episode on “grenades” at the club. Apparently a “grenade” is a woman that your friend “jumps on” and “dies on” so that you can sleep with someone else…
There are a lot of problematic phrases and concepts with that show… stemming from the fact that they speak about women like expendable sex… I don’t know… receivers? Like, it’s not flattering at all. It’s also just a low brow show that I really don’t have time to dissect.
But, when they were panning through the “grenades,” it was ONLY plus size bodies that they were showing at the club.
I turned the show off. I need to finish the second season of “Shrill” and move on to something else.
Sorry… dating apps like “Plenty of Fish” and shows like “The Jersey Shore,” you’re on my list today…
